SMART CAR

May 2008

Director of Photography: Magni Ágústsson

Director: Roar Uthaug, Great Guns

This little car went a long way to prove that size doesn't matter... all the way from London to Edinburgh in fact.

N POWER

May 2008

Director of Photography: Tim J M Green

Director: Ossie Parker, Annex Films

Shot on 35mm using two Arri 435's against a surreal model world, the latest N Power campaign has achieved a distinctly disorientating look-in camera using cardboard sets, real exterior photographed back-drops (behind the windows) and doll's house furniture.

All credit to Ossie Parker the Director for coming up with these amazing visual ideas and Danny Newton the Art Director who built everything with his team. Camera techniques included use of slow motion at up to 150fps, a careful variation of field-depth, high-speed shooting and motion control.

Three commercials were shot over a period of four weeks, click on the link below to view all three:

Ahoy hoy...

April 2008

Magni Ágústsson is currently braving the brass monkey weather in the North Atlantic on his latest Icelandic feature, where he has been filming on a fishing boat for the last six weeks.

The high sea and the low temperatures make for very harsh shooting conditions but as you'll see from the photos everything looks in ship-shape and Bristol fashion.

Look'ee here for a full account of Magni's maritime adventures when he returns to our shores in May...aye.

Hard-Fi, I Will Overcome... it's a knockout

February 2008

Dir. D.A.R.Y.L. (Pulse Films), DoP. Ed Rutherford

Some bare-knuckled direction from the hottest trio at Pulse Films, D.A.R.Y.L. coupled with beautifully lit cinematic interceptions by Ed Rutherford has clinched a memorably punchy video for Hard Fi's next single "I will overcome".

The grainy nature of Super16mm accompanied by a variation of camera speeds and evocative compositions perfectly offsets an inspiring narrative which follows a young amateur boxer struggling to overcome a challenging opponent. Superbly authenticated by the precise choreography and a brilliantly cast east-end crowd who no doubt lost their voices due to all that cheering...

The Times

February 2008

Dir. Duncan Wellaway (Upstart), DoP Mik Allen

The Times was shot on 16mm by Mik Allen, Vision's latest addition to the roster.

The stark grey architecture serves as a perfect backdrop to the isolated bright colours used within the film. Using mostly available light this charming spot follows "Paperboy" on his route in and around The Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury.

Duncan Wellaway's most recent short film Always Crashing in the Same Car, which reunited the famous Withnail & I duo Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann, won second place in the TCM 2007 Classic Shorts Competition.

Death by Chocolate

February 2008

Dir. Chris Cairns (Partizan) D.o.P Luke Palmer,

Cadbury's Créme Egg, Here Today Gone Tomorrow

Ever wondered how a Cadbury's créme egg would commit suicide?

Wonder no further, the new campaign for Britain's favourite chocolate egg throws up a medley of morose methods...

This campaign is purely stop frame animation shot on digital stills cameras (Nikon D2X's) lit with one 10k and strategically placed poly, shiney or mirror-flex for varying degrees of bounced fill.

Look out for the next batch in this ongoing campaign culminating in an extremely tricky high-speed finale shot on the Phantom camera-utilizing nearly 500 specially created Créme Egg models.

IKEA, "New Stuff" (David Lodge, Joy@RSA)

January 2008

Mik Allen joins Vision

The latest addition to our roster for 2008 is Mik Allen, a DoP who began his career as a camera trainee on an eight-week stint in the Borneo jungle for a Camel campaign! After that adventure he went on to assist on a number of features including Love Actually and Gosford Park.

For the last few years Mik has been lighting commercials and worked with a number of high-profile directors including Gerard De Thame and David Lodge.

Everybody was Kung Foo Fighting!
(Except for Ed Rutherford who was too busy lighting)

December 2007

Directed by duo "Thirty Two" of Pulse Films, The Young Knives showcase some sharp stunts in the video for their latest release, Up All Night.

Ed's use of UV light and a two-camera set-up, coupled with some clever wiring from the stunt team resulted in a pastiche fought with expert timing...

A Bout de Truffe - The Truffle Hunter (dir. Tom Tagolm)

November 2007

Already a success twice over at Raindance Film Festival, we wait with breathless anticipation to see how A Bout de Truffe does at this year's BIFA's.

Beautifully shot by Luke Scott, this certainly has been the truffaire of the bunch - picking up the first prize at the TCM Classic Shorts 2007 last week as part of the Times BFI 51st London Film Festival.

"Tiny Dancers" have a Big Job

September 2007

In Magni Agustsson's latest video, a 'rockumentary' directed by Paul Milnor at Streetgang, we move seamlessly from an intimate performance piece to a live gig - intercut with artistic compositions and complimented by a beautifully naturalistic hand-held style.

It's a bit much asking them to hold their own lights though Magni, as if they haven't got enough to do...

Shipshape and Cornwall fashion

September 2007

Ed Rutherford's latest copper-bottomed music video for "Funeral for a Friend" The Great Wide Open was directed by a collective of three directors going by the name of D.A.R.Y.L at Pulse Films. Shot in a fish shed in Cornwall, the film employs a strong nautical theme through the use of red (port) and green (starboard). By and large the look and dynamic was created firmly in camera combining a use of manually operated shift and tilt lenses, a de-synchronized shutter and some cunning day for night helicopter shots

Watch out for Ed's next video in the offing, directed and produced by the same team for "Lethal Bizzle" Police on my Back, coming soon!

Jog on... Jack

September 2007

Quite simply 3 minutes and 7 seconds of a brilliant idea shot by Denzil Armour-Brown down in Brighton. Directed by Tim Pope and captured in a wonderfully uninterrupted take, this concept tracks Jack through every human emotion experienced during an agonising 3 minute run.

Thinking outside the box

September 2007

Athlete Hurricane (Anthony Dickenson, Manifesto)

This cleverly made film showcases a number of techniques at once; it's motion control, frame by frame, long-exposure, animation - shot on digital stills cameras and then made into movies...did you catch that? Some innovative thinking and white poly boxes have resulted in an unusual take on the performance piece shot by Luke Palmer.

Click on the link below to view the video along with an extra little stop-motion spot, equally as clever, shot with Chris Cairns at Partizan.

July 2007

...another prolific music video by Denzil Armour-Brown

Directed by Partizan's Nema Nourizadeh, Denzil's latest video for Mark Ronson is a contemporary pastiche of "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit" - combining live action and animation.

A beautifully sultry lighting style is offset by a mesmorising Lily Allen in her most animated performance to date.
